Robot paints your dreams

Posted Image

Measuring sleep usually involves attaching sensors to a person's head and then creating basic charts and graphs based on brain waves. Now a robot is using similar technology to create art. It's part of the "Sleep Art Experience," a six-week project being promoted by five Ibis-brand hotels in France, Germany and Great Britain. It starts with 80 sensors embedded in hotel room mattresses. The sensors record sleep variables including motion, temperature and sound between midnight and 7 am. That data is transmitted via Wi-Fi to a robot housed in a studio in Paris. The robot uses an algorithm to convert the data into art, which is expressed through a series of brushstrokes on a black canvas. The result is a beautiful depiction of what an individual's sleep looks like, blending together the best of science and art. ... VIDEO

ET would find Earth boring

Evidence of planets supporting alien life beyond the solar system will be found within the next 50 years, renowned astronomer Sir Patrick Moore has predicted. But those fearing unwelcome visits can rest easy – he says Earth is too 'boring' for extra-terrestrials to bother with. The 89-year-old added he expected people, who could afford it, to become space tourists to the Moon, Mars and perhaps the outer reaches of the solar system by the end of the century.....

Disclosure through Disney in 2013?

Disney's aborted 1950s UFO acclimation movie headed for the big screen?

Earlier this year,  Silver Screen Saucers  asked: “Could it be that Disney is producing a dramatization of the  flying saucer fever  that swept America in 1952?” That question was prompted by the enigmatic title 1952 – a “top secret” Disney production quietly announced by the House of Mouse back June of 2011. We were told that a script was being penned by Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, Cowboys and Aliens), and nothing more. We subsequently learned that the brilliant Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) had signed on to co-write and direct.... continues

A UFO-like object floating in the clouds was caught on camera on the same day ten dead birds were found in a nearby garden. Calum Sherwood, 23, was shocked to see the outline of what appeared to be a UFO while riding on a bus in Salterbeck, south of Workington, Cumbria, on Monday.

Sharon Larkin, UFO enthusiast and Mr Sherwood’s friend who lives nearby, found ten dead birds in her garden that day. Ms Larkin claims that ‘dead birds are associated with sightings of UFOs’, but the object closely resembles a rare cloud formation....

Police investigating the disappearance of toddler Ben Needham 21 years ago will tomorrow begin digging up an area close to where he went missing in Greece, it was reported today. Ben Needham vanished on the island of Kos in July 1991 when he was just 21 months old. His mother Kerry Needham and grandparents had moved to the Greek island from Sheffield.

Despite a number of possible sightings and a range of theories about what happened to him no trace of the youngster has been found. Today investigators also released a  picture  of what they believe he would look like if still alive.....

Book review: 30 Years among the Dead

Posted Image

Author: Michael Prescott

I just finished reading the well-known book by Dr. Carl A. Wickland, 30 Years among the Dead, originally published in 1924. The book recounts Dr. Wickland's efforts to cure his psychiatric patients by spiritualist methods. His wife Anna was a powerful medium, and Wickland became convinced that some of the incurable patients institutionalized at his facility were suffering from spirit obsession. He tested his theory by subjecting the patients to electroshock therapy, which was intended to drive the obsessing entity out of the patient's "magnetic aura." The entity was then attracted to the entranced Mrs. Wickland. Dr. Wickland would speak with the earthbound spirit in an attempt to convince the spirit to open his or her spiritual eyes and progress to the next stage of development. In many cases the effort proved successful, and the patient, who had previously resisted all cures, improved markedly and could be de-institutionalized.

As one channeled spirit put it:
Earthbound spirits who torment mortals by obsessing them are man-made “devils.” Selfishness has made them what they are. They go out of the physical in ignorance of the real life, full of hatred, because they were crushed in one way or another. They have hatred for all mankind, and the first persons they can attach themselves to they try to harm, and there you have obsession….

Insanity is nothing but obsession by spirits who are sent to the spirit side of life without understanding the truth of God.

Because the book is quite famous in spiritualist circles, I'd previously tried a couple of times to get through it. I found it tough sledding, not because the content is difficult, but because the book is long and repetitious. The transcripts of numerous sessions are included, and they tend to follow the same basic pattern. It took me a certain amount of willpower to finally work my way through the entire volume.

Nevertheless, I can see a certain logic to the book's repetitive structure. It reminds me of a description I once read of another famous work of parapsychological research, Phantasms of the Living, by Myers, Podmore, and Gurney. In describing the book, a writer, whose name I forget, said that by sheer repetition Phantasms "bludgeons the mind" into accepting the reality of apparitions.... continues

Akulivik Woman Recalls Encounter With Hairy Bigfoot - Nunatsiaq Online

NEWS: Nunavik October 12, 2012 - 4:05 pm SPECIAL TO NUNATSIAQ NEWS This photo that Maggie Cruikshank posted on Facebook shows what she believes to be the footprint of the creature she saw last month near Akulivik.
This photo that Maggie Cruikshank posted on Facebook shows what she believes to be the footprint of the creature she saw last month near Akulivik.

JUSTIN NOBEL

Maggie Cruikshank of Akulivik has an incredible story to tell.

Late in the afternoon on a rainy, windy September Saturday she and a cousin went out from Akulivik to pick berries.

“We moved around a lot because we were looking for big berries,” said Cruikshank, a 46-year-old language teacher with the Kativik School Board.

“My cousin noticed something — she thought it was a hunter, but I ignored her because I wanted to go home while the sun was still up. Then, she started to be scared. I got up and looked to where she pointed. It was a very large animal, a bigfoot.”

The creature was black, hairy and without any clothes. “Taller and larger than a man,” said Cruikshank. “It walks like us but not standing straight like us, it can jump and crawl.” And its footprint measures some 40 centimetres.

Other people in Akulivik have seen the creature too, according to Cruikshank. A group of walrus hunters who had just returned with their catch were preparing to hide their meat under rocks for the winter when they saw the bigfoot. Someone else noticed it by the airport.

Other people have reported odd collections of caribou bones piled in the hills outside town, Cruikshank said. An elder found what he said were human bones in a cave outside town and suggested to her the remains might be the work of the bigfoot.

And just last week, apparently, someone spotted fresh bigfoot tracks. Someone else reportedly saw the creature standing on top of a mountain.

It’s possible the creature has been around for some time.

“There are people telling me they suddenly remember they have seen that thing before,” said Cruikshank. “Like 10 years ago or 20 years ago or 60 years ago, they saw it, they just never reported it.”

Why not? Perhaps their stories didn’t hold up, or perhaps they were scared others would mock them.

As Cruikshank has learned, there’s a lot of hullaballoo involved in taking a bigfoot sighting public. Photos of the footprint she posted on Facebook have drawn significant attention, including a great deal of criticism.

“Nobody… gonna believe until the video is reveal…” commented a Facebook user named “Arctic Charles”.

The photo that Cruikshank posted shows a hand with a yellow measuring tape stretched across a rough-looking footprint made in spongy ground.

It’s pretty clear the photo is real, and the muddy imprint indeed resembles a footprint, but footprints don’t make for good sighting stories. Facebook users have been calling for something more substantial.

“If you have video footage of the bigfoot, you can charge hundreds of thousans [sic] per frame,” said one commenter. “But please, show us the video once you get the money.”

“That footprint is not fake,” explained a third person. “However, it was done by muskox that slipped.”

There is a video, said Cruikshank, shot by her and her cousin. But she is afraid that making it public could have devastating results in the small community.

“Many people want to see the video and are starting to make negative comments,” said Cruikshank. “We want to post it but we don’t want to scare the children.”

Bigfoot may not be the only otherworldly creature in Akulivik.

In the past few years, said Cruikshank, residents have sighted little Inuit, known as Inugagulligaq, as well as giant animals, including a massive anaconda snake, a very large codfish and monstrous rabbits. Other people have reportedly seen a half-man half-fish creature, like a mermaid.

As fantastic as these creatures sound, they do resemble beings that hold a very real place in Inuit cosmology. There is Sedna, the goddess of the sea and marine mammals, Ijiraq, a shape shifter that kidnaps children and Kiviuq, a young Inuit hunter with supernatural powers.

For many, these beings are merely the stuff of legends, and don’t exist here in the real world. But not for Cruikshank.

“I’m not telling you lies,” she said. “This is scary, it has affected my emotions.”

Study Explains The Mystery Of Ball Lightning - Phys.Org

Ball lightning. Credit: iStock)

(Phys.org)—Sightings of ball lightning have been made for centuries around the world – usually the size of a grapefruit and lasting up to twenty seconds – but no explanation of how it occurs has been universally accepted by science.

In a paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres entitled 'The Birth of Ball Lightning' CSIRO and Australia National University scientists present a new mathematical theory which explains how and why it occurs.

Previous competing theories have cited microwave radiation from thunderclouds, oxidising aerosols, nuclear energy, dark matter, antimatter, and even black holes as possible causes.

This video is not supported by your browser at this time.

CSIRO scientist John Lowke discusses ball lightning and the significance of his new theory on the 'birth of ball lightning'.

Led by CSIRO scientist John Lowke, the new theory focuses on how ball lightning occurs in houses and aeroplanes – and how it can pass through glass. His theory also proposes that ball lightning is caused when leftover ions (electric energy), which are very dense, are swept to the ground following a lightning strike.

"A crucial proof of any theory of ball lightning would be if the theory could be used to make ball lightning. This is the first paper which gives a mathematical solution explaining the birth or initiation of ball lighting," says Lowke.

Lowke proposes that ball lightning occurs in houses and aeroplanes when a stream of ions accumulates on the outside of a glass window and the resulting electric field on the other side excites air molecules to form a ball discharge. The discharge requires a driving electric field of about a million volts.

"Other theories have suggested ball lightning is created by slowly burning particles of silicon formed in a lightning strike, but this is flawed. One of the ball lightning observations cited in this paper occurred when there was no thunderstorm and was driven by ions from the aircraft radar operated at maximum power during a dense fog."

Lowke used eye-witness accounts of ball lightning by two former US Air Force pilots to verify the theory. Former US Air Force lieutenant Don Smith recalls: "After flying for about 15 minutes, there developed on the randome (radar cover) two horns of Saint Elmo's fire. It looked as if the airplane now had bull's horns...they were glowing with the blue of electricity."

Lowke's paper gives the first mathematical solution explaining the birth or initiation of ball lightning using standard equations for the motion of electrons and ions. He argues it is unique because it not only explains the birth of the ball but also how it can form on glass and appear to pass through glass resulting in globes of light in people's homes or in aeroplane cockpits.

Massive Fireball Over California Coast – Oct. 17, 2012 - American Meteor Society

The American Meteor Society has received nearly 250 reports about a large fireball seen from the coast of California on October 17th, at approximately 7:44 PM Pacific time. Numerous witnesses reported hearing a series of loud booms.

John in Larkspur, CA writes:

“There were three consecutive booms that happened at least a minute later. Sounded like distant artillery fife or sonic booms.”

From Sarah in San Francisco:

“I heard a sonic boom that was came at least 1, possibly 2 minutes later.”

From Mathew in San Rafael, CA – United States:

“30 sec after the fireball went out, several very loud booms like medium sized thunder claps occurred followed by a long duration rumbling decay over another 30 sec.”

Many witnesses reported that the fireball fragmenting into multiple pieces.

While we are in the middle of the Orionid Meteor Shower and approaching the peak this weekend, this fireball has the signs of a meteorite dropping asteroidal meteor and not a fireball associated with a meteor shower. Generally cometary fireballs will vaporize high up in the atmosphere. The fact that this fireball was accompanied with sonic booms means the meteoroid penetrated the lower atmosphere — something not typically seen with cometary fireballs.

Here are two videos of the fireball:

The fireball appears in the video below at the 42 second mark.

Unfortunately for meteorite recovery experts, it looks like this entered over the ocean and if any meteorites survived they are most likely at the bottom of the sea. Here’s a map of the witness reports received so far.

â€Å“Warning! Armageddon is coming!â€ - Mysterious Universe

Born on November 9, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, Carl Sagan was an undoubted prime mover in a number of highly significant and important NASA operations and projects designed to explore the planets of our solar system. And, for his many achievements and contributions to the world of space exploration, Sagan was justifiably honored and rewarded. He became the recipient of NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement and for Distinguished Public Service, as well as the NASA Apollo Achievement Award. In other words, not only was Sagan a brilliant thinker and a true visionary, but he was an integral player in the fast paced race for outer space.

In the early 1980s, Sagan became the subject of a secret, 33-page FBI file, and related investigation, after he became involved in a very strange affair, part of which was focused upon NASA’s ultimately ill fated Columbia Space Shuttle. On November 16, 1983, the FBI’s Special Agent in Charge at Cleveland, Ohio contacted the Washington, D.C. offices to report a very odd and sinister development in the life and career of Carl Sagan. The Cleveland Office ultimately recorded the following in a short memorandum to the Director of the FBI:

“On November 15, 1983, Dr. Carl Sagan, Space Sciences Building, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York received a handwritten envelope postmarked Cleveland, Ohio, Nov 10 1983, containing a two page typewritten letter. Letter comprised of cover page dated November 9, 1983 stating it was an open letter directed to various news publishers and identifying Sagan as an influential person to convince others veracity [sic] of message. Both message and cover letter bear typed name of author as M. Springfield.”

The letter to Sagan from the mysterious M. Springfield was very brief in content, but was, without doubt, highly unusual, to say the very least. And it read like something straight out of just about the wildest science-fiction story, too: “The message is so important that I want you to witness that you have received it before November 22 1983. You have been chosen because of your standing in the community. I believe you are a person of integrity with the ability to convince others that this message is true,” the letter began.

From there onwards, the communication to Sagan went distinctly downhill. Springfield summed up the allegedly dire situation in an extremely weird rant that began thus:

“An Open Letter to All. Warning! Armageddon is coming!” On November 22, 1983, Springfield told Sagan, terrorists would explode a bomb in either a warehouse or a market that was providing free food to impoverished people in San Salvador, but which, in reality was designed to divert people away from a planned attack on a nearby fuel storage installation. Then, suddenly moving on to a completely unconnected topic, Springfield added that if the next launch of the Columbia Space Shuttle went ahead on schedule, there would be a catastrophic explosion in the rocket, “due to a fuel leak.”

And worse was to come, claimed Springfield: in May, 1985 war would begin in the Middle East, with the only victor being Israel.

Springfield then made a very strange prediction indeed: “The American presidency will be Reagan-Bush-Bush and a democrat in 96 whose birthday is the same year as our first president. He will be our last.” Springfield continued with a whole series of predictions: Poland would be free by 1990; New York and San Francisco would soon both disappear into the oceans; a Third World War would begin in 1998; and the world would be poisoned, the result being that life would be practically extinguished by the apocalyptic events.

On receipt of this extremely strange missive, Sagan quickly, and maybe not surprisingly, contacted the FBI – who swung into action, as a formerly Secret FBI document of November 18, 1983, noted:

“A search of indices, State Law Enforcement Computer, and local directories, failed to locate a person identifiable with the author of captioned letter, described as ‘M. Springfield.’ Cleveland telephone directory shows a listing for an ‘M. Springfield’ which address is a large apartment complex. A suitable pretext telephone call to that address revealed that ‘M. Springfield’ at that address died in 1972 and widow now resides there. She had no knowledge of a letter sent to a Dr. Sagan.”

Additional FBI documentation now in the public domain demonstrates that Bureau special agents went to great lengths indeed to try and identify the source of, and motive behind, the letter. The original letter and envelope were quickly sent to an FBI forensics laboratory for analysis, but in an FBI report on the matter that was concisely entitled Bomb Threat it was revealed that unfortunately “no latent prints of value” could be found on either the letter or the envelope, and that the forensic analysis was brought to a frustrating close without any form of success whatsoever having been achieved.

The very strange saga of bizarre prophecies, Carl Sagan and the FBI was at its end…

Plasma, 4th State of Matter - Is There Intelligent Life Dwelling Within? - Supernatural UFO

Posted Image

Author: Diane Tessman

After many years of being involved in UFOlogy, I have concluded that some UFOs are intricately connected to plasma. I would like to share my thoughts on this possibility. In doing so, I keep in mind that although we usually look for life forms similar to ours (corporeal life having formed in an earth-like environment), where life really seems to dwell is in our consciousness and also, no doubt, in consciousness throughout the universe.

Our consciousness exists in our minds and according to modern science, our minds “run” on electric circuitry.  Does life itself dwell in this electric energy rather than in the corporeal form?  In many sightings, the UFOs have a plasma-like appearance; for example, this description was given by a witness recently:  Pennsylvania witnesses videotape 'two glowing red orbs' hovering over field

Many times, UFOs defy gravity making right turns or small circles at tremendous speeds; science as we know it concludes that occupants inside they would die from the “g forces” involved. This is one argument by skeptics against the reality of UFOs.

Posted Image
Picture: Artwork of plasma UFO

Are UFOs plasma formations? However, what if the UFOs are composed of plasma? The assumption is then that “of course” there are no life forms in plasma, so UFOs are obviously just weird plasma phenomena devoid of life. Even the infamous “swamp gas” had a plasma concept behind it. That plasma can have no intelligence is a conclusion of science as we know it. However, we still have much to learn scientifically, and we are wise to keep in mind that advanced science as witnessed by less-advanced beings (us), seems to be impossible even though we do witness it as it unfolds. The trouble with stating that plasma is just plasma is that UFOs display intelligent behavior, even if it seems a bit like alien behavior to us. We can’t quite make sense of why UFOs act as they do, but their intelligence (or that of their occupants), has been proven over and over again.

With thanks to  Mark Heley’s website for this UAP section:   In fact, Project Condign was the name given to a top secret UFO study undertaken by the British Government's Defense Intelligence Staff (DIS) between 1997 and 2000. The report looked into all reported sightings of UFOs over the previous three decades. Between 1967 and 1997, there were 100–750 credible incidences a year in British air space alone. The project came to the remarkable conclusion that the phenomenon was indisputably real, but that they weren't dealing with physical craft. Instead, the report concludes that the UFO phenomenon is caused by highly charged atmospheric plasmas. These were named unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs).

In a high-energy state, the UAPs are visible to the naked eye, but in a lower energy state they may only be visible in the infrared spectrum or on radar. The UAPs generally have a magnetic field about 5,000 times weaker than Earth's, but the UAP's field is pulsed and rotating, which seems to provide them with their source of propulsion. The UAPs were also capable of flying in formation and quite frequently formed complex geometric arrangements of three to five balls that gave a very good approximation of the underside shape of a classic UFO. These balls were able to move synchronously and were observed to be able to join and then part again. When flying in formation, light in between the balls of plasmas often appears to be blocked, giving the appearance of a solid craft.

UFOs

The power of these UAPs is so great that close proximity to their plasma fields can seriously harm a vehicle or person. The Project Condign report notes that scientists in the former Soviet Union have taken a particular interest in the UFO/UAP phenomena and are pursuing related techniques for military purposes. Several Russian and Chinese aircraft have been destroyed chasing UFOs.

Parts of the Condign Report are still classified and have not been published. These include the relationship between UAPs and solar sunspot cycles, various drawings, and photographs. However, the report does include the admission that the significance of ley lines and Earth energy grids were investigated as part of the report's study. The effects of proximity to these UAP plasmoids can be wide ranging in the people who encounter them:

•  75 percent of people felt odd or dizzy or reported tingling sensations.
•  65 percent saw vivid images and/or said they experienced pleasant vibrations.
•  Only 40 percent said they experienced fear or terror.

The Condign Report also notes that there are significant neurological effects on humans who encountered the UAPs. Contact with UAPs created serious perceptual and temporal distortions. The Condign Report's conclusion after three years of gathering and processing data is that there is “no evidence that they (UAPs) . . . represent any hostile intent” and that “further investigation should be made into the applicability of various characteristics of plasmas in novel military applications.”

Russian UFO Research

Extensive research on these plasmoids has also been carried out by the Russian Academy of Sciences in a department headed by V. G. Azahazha. They concluded that these phenomena are highly mobile high-energy plasma vortexes, which they call UFOs. Their studies showed that these plasma UFOs exhibited the following behaviors:

•  Gradual growth
•  Splitting into two or more separate parts
•  Dissolution to invisibility
•  Disparate bright lights merging into larger formations (often reported as small craft joining the mother ship and forming a row of
portholes)
•  Disappearance, accompanied by a smell
•  Rotation, nonlinear motion
•  Weak thermal radiation
•  Translucence, haloes, blackness
•  Beamed light emissions

The beamed light emissions are explained by the Russian scientists as “discharge, or leakage paths” that allow the plasma to “float off” and to change direction, seemingly at will. (end of Mark Heley’s  contribution)

Is there intelligent life within plasma formations?  “…change directions seemingly at will?” So let’s ask THE question: Might UFO beings actually be a form of life within plasma? Or just simply - a plasma form of life? If they are a plasma form of life, we tend to assume they are primitive life, like an amoeba, or perhaps a jellyfish. Of course there have been many “jelly fish” and “manta ray” UFO sightings throughout the years which seem to be natural animals of some sort, “swimming” in the sky. Often these critters have plasma-like electric colors. Are they plasmoids? Are we wrong to just assume these “critters” are all of low intelligence? They are probably an ancient form of life, manifesting and de-manifesting in the skies since the time Earth first had an atmosphere. They have had time to evolve high intelligence – more time than any other life form we can think of. Also keep in mind that the sky critters are not specifically manta rays or other ocean-life which they resemble any more than humans are specifically the gorillas whom we resemble. Of course, humans under-estimate the intelligence of other living creatures in general, but that is another subject!

Or, are these light-forms traveling on plasma corridors? A variation: What if UFOs are the plasma vehicles (plasmoid ships) of electric life-forms or possibly life forms composed of light itself? Do these light-forms travel on plasma pathways? Remembering Science 101, lightning (electricity/light) travels across the sky and down to earth on plasma pathways or corridors.  Here is another example of light/electricity traveling on plasma:

The Army has a shiny new laser plasma lightning cannon. It shoots lightning bolts down plasma channels created by laser beams to disable electronics and blow up targets, too. It is a laser plasma lightning cannon.  This is indeed the grandfather of Star Trek’s phaser. Yes, 2012 humans now have a weapon which uses electricity traveling on plasma. How far along are the aliens or the future-humans who are a mere one thousand years ahead of us in their use of plasma? If there are beings who have become sheer energy, plasma would seem to be their obvious vehicle (starcraft) or passageway. This all gets a bit hard to imagine so let’s back up:

Some paranormal events also seem to have plasma-like manifestations; remember the old “ectoplasm” that the Spiritualists referred to? Ghosts seem to be in a state of existence between solid and gaseous; in some cases, you can see through a ghost, and yet it has a solid, comprehensible form, whereas gas is formless.

Keeping The Paranormal in mind, here is the definition of plasma: “In physics, plasma is a state of matter to gas in which a certain portion of the particles ionized. Heating a gas may ionize its molecules or atoms (reduce or increase the number of electrons them), thus turning it into a plasma, which contains charged particles: positive ions and negative electrons or ions. Ionization can be induced by other means, such as strong electromagnetic field applied with a laser.

Plasma as we know it has a higher temperature than gas, which means, it is very hot. There is a form of plasma called cold plasma which is still hot. If there are light-beings, we must assume their consciousness, which is what makes them living beings, is not sensitive to extreme heat as we are with our physical bodies. The Paranormal and UFOs as well, seem intricately connected to electromagnetic phenomena. Ghosts seem to “flow” in some cases; electromagnetic and electric anomalies are frequent around ghosts and other paranormal events. Lights blink off and come back on. Technical devices (cell phones, cameras, car radios and more), are interfered with by UFOs and there are some reports of similar events caused by ghosts.

It should be noted also that plasma formations or plasma ships have been seen and photographed outside Earth’s atmosphere as well by astronauts and telescopes. They are not just restricted to inside Earth’s atmosphere. This would tend to indicate these are not ancient Earth life forms alone but that they also exist or travel to outer space. Obviously they do not need air to breathe and have a different relationship with gravity than we do. Again, the presence of intelligence within these space plasmoid enigmas seems obvious. To summarize, I do not feel that UFOs and The Paranormal are the same phenomenon but I do feel some UFOs and much of The Paranormal, involve sentient plasmoids.  They use plasma in order to manifest, or might be a plasmoid form of life.

Artwork: Plasma vortex in space

Where are plasma beings from? Are light-beings or electric-beings native to Earth? Are they from an adjacent brane (multiverse)? Or are they from far distant worlds wherein light-beings flourish and have evolved far beyond the present human state?

Even though it seems certain that some UFOs are plasma-connected light-forms, this does not negate the repeated questions, “Where are they from?” and “What do they want?”

Of course, advanced corporeal beings (like humans in 400 years), might use plasma projections or technology. Certainly this possibility is less far-out than actual plasmoid life because all this theory would demand is slightly advanced science. Are plasma-ships sent out to electrically gather information on Earth 2012, then called back to an actual space ship outside of Earth’s atmosphere? Just another possibility!

LightQuest is a fascinating book by Andrew Collins which goes into the theories I am discussing. Mr. Collin’s approach is refreshing, even while traveling a lot of familiar ground. He manages to make ufology fascinating, leaping outside the accepted box.

Collins takes a favorite foil of the most ardent UFO debunkers and turns it back on them and effectively takes it out of their hands. I’m referring to “plasma” - as in the natural formations of plasmatic balls of light energy which form as a byproduct of certain geological processes beneath the earth's surface. Infamous skeptic Philip Klass, frequently presented plasma as a favorite explanation for mysterious lights whether it was the famous "Foo Fighters" which dogged military aircraft during World War II or the thousands of encounters with saucer-objects on a lonely road. Klass often pointed out that natural plasmas can act in weird and unexpected ways, giving the impression of alien intelligence operating behind them. This, he said, was true of swamp gas.

Andrew Collins agrees that plasma lights are almost certainly natural formations generated by earth-bound processes, specifically, high pressure faults beneath the surface of the earth. Plasma formations have even been created in a laboratory using pressure tools to certain kinds of rocks until they burst forth plasma emissions.

However, Collins takes it a step further, as am I in this article: Might natural plasma emissions actually play host or be the vehicles of-- intelligent life forms? LIGHT BEINGS! These beings (life forms) use plasma for manifesting into enter our dimension, perhaps for short periods of time. Or longer? Who knows for sure at this point, but just as lightning travels on plasma passageways, so might light-beings.

Collins explains how a natural plasma formation could be the "temporary body" of trans-human life forms. He mentions quantum entanglement, on which I have written several articles (see New Dawn Special Issue 6 on UFOs and Human Consciousness/New World Order).  Physicist David Bohm’s "implicate order" is a possible background framework of how all this could come together.

In Light Quest, Collins looks into the Barney and Betty Hill abduction, and the incredible events which took place at the Rendelsham military base in the U.K., and less known cases of abduction as well.

Another piece of the plasma puzzle is its possible connection to crop circles! Collins does not look into this but certainly it is a leading possibility in the crop circle mystery.

Picture: Plasma UFO about to create a crop circle?

Conclusions: I stress that I also believe other UFO occupants come from time (what we call “the human future”) and are probably corporeal beings, as well as other UFO occupants coming from “space” (far distant planets), who are also probably corporeal. I do not feel that “plasma” solves the UFO puzzle. I feel that we are being visited by a plethora of mind-boggling beings from all sorts of mind-boggling sources!

Regarding plasma: When you look at abduction memories which are retrieved under hypnosis and the entire elusive “I think I was abducted,” or “I think I was contacted by space beings” phenomenon, it is possible it fits in nicely with a plasma/light theory. The beings encountered were “of energy” (not of physical form), and so while the human mind recorded the encounter using its usual EM circuits, nothing physical/corporeal ever took place.

The encounters were real but they were not with beings of the 1st State of Matter (solid) but rather, with beings of the 4th State of Matter (plasma/energy).

Dream levels of mind: These beings might sometimes use the “dream EM circuits” (dream levels) of the human mind so that the encounters are not easily remembered. Perhaps this is for the protection of the human, so as not to be viewed as crazy, or for hidden reasons known only to the energy beings.

Advanced Intelligence: I believe we are very wrong to assume light-beings who use plasma corridors are inherently demonic or negative. Instead, it seems logical that they have advanced far beyond what we can presently imagine and are highly intelligent. They have evolved past the need of a corporeal confirmation for their own existence; their consciousness is contained within their light-form. This is probably the evolutionary direction in which we are headed too.

The Army’s new laser plasma lightning cannon

However, when one really perceives this possibility, it does blow one’s mind!

On top of that, as with the entire UFO phenomenon, we humans start with the finished product, so to speak: We see the UFO. Then we are off to scratch our heads, trying to begin at step one of HOW could this be? Who is in there? Where/when did it come from?
It’s the same way with my own encounters. They happened. And I have spent the rest of my life researching, thinking, feeling – what happened. It has changed my life but I would not have it any other way.

The Mind Outside: We can call the morphic field, the Mind Outside (each individual mind having the “Mind Inside which connects to the Mind Outside); the Mind Outside “runs” on electric circuits just as our individual minds do.

Quantum entanglement of two minds would be an entanglement of two minds, causing those minds to “run” on the same circuitry and essentially be the same mind but in different environments. A feeling like this is reported by some humans who have encountered UFO occupants. Quantum entanglement causes morphic resonance between two minds, and it seems that light-beings would readily use such a process.

Of course, one could be entangled with a corporeal space man a far distant planet or from the Year 2400 instead of a light-form zooming along on plasma corridors; in each case, the human of the 21st Century would absorb only what the human stage of development allowed her to absorb and learn.  Perhaps that is the bottom line here: we humans must realize that we have far to go; we are not, as it turns out, the top of the cosmic evolutionary heap.

Personal proof: Finally, when I gaze at these 2 photos I took in a Kilkenny, Ireland, in Spring of 1991 on a cheap camera which took 110 film, I have my own personal proof that light, plasma, and advanced intelligence is involved in the Unknown. I say “my own personal proof” because I know these two pictures (frame 1 with frame 2 following it immediately), are absolutely legitimate. I saw nothing with the naked eye and I don’t think my cat Sakima did either. Are these photos UFO connected or paranormal related?  Both?

The “kind” of light seems identical to the Army’s laser plasma lightning cannon (see picture). This “kind” of light is somehow ABSOLUTE LIGHT. It must involve light traveling on plasma in order to create this kind of “density” of light. It is opaque light, if you will.
But is it simply a plasma phenomenon with no intelligence involved? This is where my proof of advanced intelligence comes into play; look at the form the plasma/light has taken! It is a form which I recognize in my reality, it has two chubby legs, two rounded little wings, and a round head.

A second later (second frame), it was zooming away in a near-saucer form. It must have been trying to communicate, using a form which was familiar to me or to my cat. No, it is not a teddy bear, it is not a butterfly, but the general shape and form is familiar to a human like a teddy bear or a butterfly. It is an alien intelligence trying to form an earth animal or an animal familiar to the perceiver!

I did not see anything visually but I seem to have focused my camera in both frames on the light-form. How could this be? I can only think that it did reach another level of my mind and so that level of me - did focus on the flying light-form.

This is my personal proof that:

1) This is a light/plasma phenomenon
2) It had advanced intelligence and knew about my mind (what would be meaningful to me)
3) It reached some level of my mind of which I was not consciously aware and that level focused my camera right on the light-form.

Earth-Sized World Found Next Door - Discovery

Scientists have found an Earth-sized planet circling a neighbor star just 4 light-years away.

No need to brush up on extraterrestrial etiquette quite yet, however. The planet, which flies around its parent star 10 times closer than Mercury orbits the sun, probably is inhospitable for life since its temperature would be more than 2,240 degrees Fahrenheit -- far too hot for liquid water to exist on the surface. Water is believed to be necessary for life.

But the newly found planet orbiting Alpha Centauri B, a sun-like star roughly 25 trillion miles away, could have better-positioned siblings.

SLIDE SHOW: Exquisite Exoplanetary Art

“From statistical studies, low-mass planets are very frequently found in multiple systems,” lead researcher Xavier Dumusque, with the University of Geneva in Switzerland, wrote in an email to Discovery News.

So far, scientists have only ruled out the possibility of massive planets with orbital periods of 200 days or less around Alpha Centauri B, so that leaves plenty of room for the detection of low-mass planets in the star's so-called "habitable zone" -- the distance where water can exist on a planet's surface, Dumusque added.

Planets positioned the same distance as Earth is to the sun would take 365 days to orbit a parent star of the same type and size as the sun. Alpha Centauri B’s newly found world circles in just 3.2 days, but the star is roughly half the size of sun, which puts its habitable zone about where Venus is in our solar system. Venus orbits in 225 days.

SLIDE SHOW: Top Exoplanets for Alien Life

Scientists already have found nearly 800 planets beyond the solar system, about 10 percent of which are considered low-mass worlds, meaning they are up to about 10 times the size of Earth or smaller.

“Most of the low-mass planets are in systems of two, three, up to six or seven planets, so finding in our closest neighbor one Earth-mass planet ... opens a really good prospect for detecting planets in the habitable zone in the system that is very close to us,” astronomer Stephane Udry, with Geneva University in Switzerland, told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

"In that sense, it is a landmark," Udry said.

HOWSTUFFWORKS: Top 10 Remarkable Exoplanets

Scientists using Europe’s HARPS telescope spent four years trying to ferret out telltale signs of a small planet’s gravitational tug on light coming from Alpha Centauri B.

The measurement is difficult because of variations in the star's light caused by other phenomenon, such as flares and magnetic storms, similar to sunspots on the sun.

“Trying to extract a signal that you are interested in when it is in the presence of “noise” -- in this case the variability of the star -- is difficult. One has to apply special analysis methods and tricks. The real challenge, in this particular case, was in how to analyze the data,” astronomer Artie Hatzes, with Thuringian State Observatory in Tautenburg, Germany, wrote in an email to Discovery News.

“I still have my doubts,” Hatzes added. “Even though there is clearly a signal in the data at 3.26 days, the nature of this is still open to debate.”

More data -- and more sensitive instruments -- will nail down whether the planet actually exists or not, and if it has any siblings.

“Everything we know about this system so far is extremely tantalizing," said astronomer Greg Laughlin, with the University of California in Santa Cruz. “This is our backyard and to find out that planet formation did occur there is just extraordinarily exciting.” The research appears in this week’s Nature.

Bigfoot Roams Panola County, Sighting Reported - The Panola Watchman

Believe it or not, a bigfoot sighting has been reported in Panola County.

A caller whom Panola County Sheriff Jack Ellett referred to as a reliable source contacted the Sheriff’s Office Thursday evening, October 3, 2012, to report the sighting around 9 p.m. He said he knew it sounded crazy, but he thought he had seen a bigfoot creature. He said he would have felt bad if someone got hurt by the creature, so he notified the authorities of the sighting as a precaution.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the caller said he was headed home from Louisiana and when he crossed the state line on FM 123, he saw the creature. He said it was really big and strange looking. It was crouched down in the ditch, and as he drove by, it stood up. The creature appeared to be 7 feet in height, and had yellow eyes, the caller stated. He said it was very creepy looking, and although he knew it could be someone pulling a prank, but if it was, the person did a better make-up job than Hollywood.

The caller assured the dispatcher he was not crazy, had not been drinking and would take a lie detector test to prove it if needed.

PSCO Deputy Adam Jones was sent to check the area. He through the area but was unable to locate Bigfoot.

A Sci-Fi Secret: The Bradbury File - Nick Redfern

Back in 2009, I wrote a book called Science Fiction Secrets. Published by Anomalist Books, it dealt with how and why government agencies have taken a long and clandestine interest in the world of sci-fi and the players in it.

Had I got it at the time, I would have included it in the book, as it would have made a great addition. What am I talking about? Well, I'll tell you: The FBI's intriguing file on sci-fi legend, Ray Bradbury, which was recently declassified and is now available to read at the FBI's website, The Vault.

Israel scrambled fighter jets to intercept a drone last Saturday that crossed deep into Israeli airspace from the Mediterranean Sea, shooting the aircraft down over the country's southern desert, the military said. Have you noticed that the group responsible for the drone still seems to be unclear?

Some media reports sought to blame the Lebanese Islamic militant group Hezbollah. However, what navy does Hezbollah have to be able to launch such a drone from the Mediterranean sea? UFO Sightings Daily now reports that the drone that was reported to have been shot down by Israel was a UFO of possible alien origin.

UFO Sightings Daily is coordinated by Scott C. Waring, who is a UFO researcher and author who has become an honorary astronomer through his independent investigative research on anomalies in space and on planets like Mars. Mr. Waring had been affiliated with the United States Air Force at SAC base (USAF flight line). He currently owns an ESL School in Taiwan.

Mr. Waring elaborates on his testimony.

“Now news is stating that this is a UAV or Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and they decided this by the way it moves as such high speeds from one position to anther with sudden reverse moves that no jet could perform. This still has not been identified an all surrounding countries have denied responsibility. All evidence points to this being a UFO from space [or a different dimension].”

On 19 August 2012 an Israeli witness with his wife reported on MUFON seeing 13 - 16 orbs. Diverse other UFO sightings have been reported by Israelis [Example below].

Mysterious Elk-Shaped Structure Discovered In Russia - NBC News

A huge geoglyph in the shape of an elk or deer discovered in Russia may predate Peru's famous Nazca Lines by thousands of years.

The animal-shaped stone structure, located near Lake Zjuratkul in the Ural Mountains, north of Kazakhstan, has an elongated muzzle, four legs and two antlers. A historical Google Earth satellite image from 2007 shows what may be a tail, but this is less clear in more recent imagery.

Excluding the possible tail, the animal stretches for about 900 feet (275 meters) at its farthest points (northwest to southeast), the researchers estimate, equivalent to two American football fields. The figure faces north and would have been visible from a nearby ridge.

"The figure would initially have looked white and slightly shiny against the green grass background," write Stanislav Grigoriev, of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of History & Archaeology, and Nikolai Menshenin, of the State Centre for Monument Protection, in an article first detailing the discovery published last spring in the journal Antiquity. They note that it is now covered by a layer of soil.

Fieldwork carried out this past summer has shed more light on the glyph's composition and date, suggesting it may be the product of a "megalithic culture," researchers say. They note that hundreds of megalithic sites have been discovered in the Urals, with the most elaborate structures located on a freshwater island about 35 miles (60 km) northeast of the geoglyph. [ See Photos of Russia's Nazca Lines ]

Discovery & excavation
A man named Alexander Shestakov first discovered the glyphs using satellite images. He alerted researchers, who sent out a hydroplane and paraglider to survey the giant structure.

This has since progressed to an on-the-ground excavation by a team led by Grigoriev. They've found that the stone architecture of the geoglyph is quite elaborate. When they excavated part of a hind leg the largest stones were on the edges, the smaller ones inside. This past summer they also found the remains of passageways and what appear to be small walls on the hoof and muzzle of the animal.

"The hoof is made of small crushed stones and clay. It seems to me there were very low walls and narrow passages among them. The same situation in the area of a muzzle: crushed stones and clay, four small broad walls and three passages," Grigorievwrote in an email to LiveScience. He cautioned that his team didn't excavate all the way down to the bottom of the walls, not wishing to damage the geoglyph.

Dating the geoglyph
Among the finds from the excavations are about 40 stone tools, made of quartzite, found on the structure's surface. Most of them are pickaxe-like tools called  mattocks, useful for digging and chopping. "Perhaps they were used to extract clay," he writes in the email.

The style of stone-working called lithic chipping used on one artifact dates it to the Neolithic and Eneolithic (sixth to third millennia B.C.), though Grigoriev says the technology is more typical of the Eneolithic, between the fourth and third millennia B.C.

If that date is correct, it would make the geoglyph far older than Peru's Nazca Lines, the very earliest of which were created around 500 B.C. Grigorievadded that current studies of ancient pollen at the site will help to narrow down the age. [ Gallery: Aerial Photos Reveal Mysterious Stone Structures ]

In the Antiquity journal article, Grigoriev and Menshenin point out that palaeozoological studies show that the landscape in the southern Urals supported fewer trees in the Eneolithic, with forest growth not appearing until about 2,500 years ago. "This means that there were open landscapes in the Eneolithic and Bronze Age, which allowed the hill figure to be created," they write.

A megalithic culture
Researchers say this geoglyph may have been built by a "megalithic culture" in the region that created stone monuments in prehistoric times.

"[M]any megalithic sites with features in common with European megaliths have been located: Some 300 are known but have not yet been studied in detail," write Grigoriev and Menshenin in the Antiquity article. Among these megaliths are numerous "menhirs," large upright standing stones.

The most spectacular megalithic complexes are on the relatively small Vera Island, located on Turgoyak Lake, about 35 miles (60 km) northeast of the geoglyph.

Grigoriev and Julia Vasina of the South-Ural State University described the Vera Island megaliths in a 2010 article, noting the surviving portion of one monument, megalith two, as being covered by a mound and supporting a gallery and square chamber. Another monument, megalith one, is cut into the bedrock and covered by a mound consisting of stones, brown sand and lots of grass. It is more than 60 feet (19 meters) long and 20 feet (6 meters) wide. It contains three chambers one of which has "bas relief sculptures" in the shape of animals, probably a bull and wolf.

Stone tools and ceramics found at the megalithic sites date them to between the Eneolithic period and the early Iron Age, around 3,000 years ago. Researchers emphasize more dating work needs to be done to verify; however, if the evidence holds, the giant geoglyph, along with the megaliths, were constructed millennia before Peru's Nazca Lines, a testament to the building prowess of an ancient prehistoric culture in the Ural Mountains.

Station Identification - Snopes

E-mail this page E-mail this Claim:   A broadcast by Houston's KLEE-TV was received by viewers in England three years after the station had gone off the air.
Example:   [Reader's Digest, 1958] Have you ever wondered what ultimately becomes of the waves that radio and TV stations sent out into space 24 hours a day? Do they fade and vanish or do they keep going forever? We do know that sometimes pictures appear mysteriously, long after a program has finished. One of the most famous of all such weird happenings was in England in September 1953.

Viewers in many parts of England suddenly saw an identification card for TV station KLEE of Houston, Texas appear on their screens one day. Several viewers took pictures of the image to prove the happening, but when British broadcasting engineers advised KLEE in Houston of the unusual event, they were told that the station had been off the air since 1950. No KLEE identification card had been shown for the past three years.

Where had the picture been for three years? Why did it appear only in England and how did it get back from wherever it had been? It makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Origins:   Many baby boomers have come across the spooky anecdote about Houston television station KLEE somewhere or other. It appeared in the December 1958 issue of Test pattern Reader's Digest and has since been reprinted in numerous Reader's Digest anthologies and countless volumes of "strange-but-true" stories.

As an intriguing bit of "weird science," this one is hard to beat. That viewers across the Atlantic could pick up signals from an American TV station in those pre-satellite days was remarkable enough, but from a station that had been off the air for more than two years? Imagine the possibilities! If all those radio and TV signals we'd been beaming around for decades never really went away, perhaps we could eavesdrop on broadcasts from earlier eras; maybe sit at home and enjoy an evening listening to Amos 'N' Andy or the 1934 World Series. And if radio waves kept bouncing around for years and years without dissipating, maybe other intelligent beings in the universe were enjoying old episodes of "The Honeymooners" and "I Love Lucy" and marking down Earth as a place they just had to visit. Small wonder this story was eagerly told and re-told and cited in innumerable UFO-related books.

The tale of the mysterious TV signal is just another entry in the "too good to be true" column, however. The whole thing was a hoax.

The saga began when station KPRC-TV in Houston received a letter from England addressed to the president of KLEE. It read: Enclosed herewith is a photograph taken by an ordinary box camera of what I believe is your test signal received 3:50 p.m. 14 September 1953. It would be of great interest and help if you could be so kind as to confirm or deny by return mail that this is so and at the same time it would be of great help if you would endorse the back of the photograph and return. Your help in this matter would be much appreciated. KPRC's chief engineer was baffled. How a TV signal originating in Houston could have been received all the way in England was puzzling enough, but an even bigger mystery was how anyone could have seen the identification card shown in the photograph: KLEE had been bought by the Houston Post and renamed KPRC in mid-1950, and its call sign had not been used since.

KPRC initially pursued the possibility that what English viewers had seen was actually an advertisement for Kleenex brand facial tissues, but this theory failed to pan out. The BBC looked into the matter but was unable to definitively confirm or disprove it. (Why the fundamental incompatibility between American TV signals and British television sets didn't immediately indicate to the investigators that the whole thing was a hoax remains puzzling.) When engineers from the Chrysler Corporation in America investigated and declared the pictures to be valid, the tale entered the world of Reader's Digest lore and became forever embedded in the minds of millions of readers as a "verified true story."

Although the folks at KPRC could not have known at the time, several clues pointed to the whole affair's being a hoax. What KPRC had received was in a fact a form letter; many other American stations had received similar letters with photographs reporting sightings of their own identification cards as well. KPRC was the only station whose call letters had changed in the previous few years, however, providing a hint that whoever was sending the letters was working with slightly out-of-date information. The letters were also suspect because they never included anything but photographs of station call signs; they showed no pictures taken from broadcast programs or commercials. Finally, many of the pictures were similar but not identical to the stations' identification cards; in some cases there were subtle differences that couldn't be completely explained by poor reception or bad photography.

The reply to KPRC's correspondence with the English observer who had sent them the photograph of their call sign eventually revealed the workings of the hoax. Their letter was answered by a business partner of the observer, who disclosed that they were engaged in an enterprise to build "highly sensitive super-heterodyne" television sets capable of receiving signals over great distances, all without the need of antennae. The hoaxsters' TV sets did no such thing, of course, but they weren't going to let such petty details dissuade them from fooling others into believing it. Somehow they obtained photographs or other likenesses of call signs from TV stations in the USA (as well as France, South America, and the Soviet Union), reproduced them, and projected the images onto the screen of their fabulous "invention" for a select audience of credulous viewers. They then encouraged their guests to take pictures as proof of their amazing achievements in long-range reception and send them to the host stations for verification. This explained why their sets never "received" anything other than images of station identification cards: faking actual broadcasts with moving images was too difficult a feat for them to pull off, and the reception of nothing but call signs meant they didn't have to concoct any explanations for the lack of sound. One giveaway revealed by their collection of photographs was that the Soviet TV station whose signal they had allegedly received was apparently broadcasting its call signal in English!

(Note the subtle distortions in the original story. Although it may have been literally true that viewers from "many different parts of England" saw the KLEE signal, they all saw it in the same place, on the very same TV set. And KLEE hadn't technically been "off the air" for three years; the station had merely changed ownership and call letters in the interim.)

KPRC learned all about this scam in good time, but as usual the mundane truth did not receive nearly as much publicity as the sensational original story. Nearly half a century later, a good many people still believe this to be one of our time's most baffling "unsolved mysteries."

Bigfoot Research Gets Lift from Stealth Airship - Yahoo News

Past expeditions to find conclusive evidence for the existence of Bigfoot have at least two things in common: They were unsuccessful, and they were ground-based.

That's why the Falcon Project will make history regardless of whether it achieves its goal of capturing "clear, steady film evidence of a Hominoid in its natural habitat."

Using a 45-foot-long (14 meters), camera-mounted, remote-controlled airship, project founder William Barnes plans to work with a team that includes one scientist to conduct nighttime flyovers of reported Bigfoot hotspots around the United States.

Barnes, a gold dredger whose current endeavor was inspired by an alleged encounter with a Bigfoot-like creature he claims to have had in 1997, thinks the helium-filled craft will allow his team to succeed where others have failed due to its unprecedented advantages in two key areas: stealth and maneuverability.

The camera aboard the craft can film in infrared, thermal imaging and high definition. And as the ship scans densely wooded regions from a penetrating vantage, it will never spook a potential subject with a broken twig or run out of breath in a one-sided foot race, Barnes believes. [Want to Shoot Bigfoot? It's Legal in Texas]

Thanks to its gyroscopically stabilized housing, the ship's camera is protected against a common shortcoming of purported video footage of quasi-mythical creatures: a suspiciously shaky image.

While there has never been any definitive evidence suggesting that giant bipedal apes roam the wilds of North America largely undetected, the Falcon Project does have a bona fide scientist as its principal investigator.

Jeff Meldrum, a professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University, is the rare academic who entertains and actively investigates the possibility that Bigfoot, or something like it, exists.

"Even if definitive DNA sequence data point to the existence of a novel species, it will not suddenly become easy to study such a rare and elusive primate in the field. That's where the Falcon Project comes in," said Meldrum.

In 2011, Meldrum was invited to take part in a high-profile Russian expedition to find that country's brand of unverified wildman, the yeti. The expedition garnered international attention when researchers claimed to have found "indisputable proof" of the yeti, but Meldrum concluded the entire expedition seemed to be an orchestrated publicity stunt, with all of the supposed evidence planted in advance, according to AOL.com.

The Falcon Project's custom-built airship, called the Aurora Mk II, is being constructed by Canada-based Remote Aerial Tripods Inc., and is expected to be completed in the spring, according to tech website Gizmag.

Meldrum gives more credibility to Bigfoot's existence than most scientists, but a 2012 public opinion poll found that about a third of Americans believe the creature is probably real.

Close Encounter With A "Primate Spaceman? - Caravaca Files

jac1.jpg
On August 26, 1964, doctor José Juan Rivera was the protagonist in an amazing close encounter with an unknown entity in Algeciras (Cadiz, Spain). That afternoon the gynecologist of 26 years had gone with his motorcycle to the secluded Punta Carnero, where there is a lighthouse that serves the Strait of Gibraltar.Rivera drove slowly along the narrow road, eventually entering a deviation. He was surprised by a disquieting silence throughout the area. He then observed, two meters away, a strange creature that moved in great jumps. It was a creature of about 1.5 meter high, covered with tight garb that could have been his own fur.It had a thick skull with large black eyes, and very long arms which remained rigid, held close to the body. The witness said it appeared to be a monkey. The facial features appeared human-like. jac2.jpg"But the creature seemed to float above the ground, before disappearing in the bushes," said Rivera. When the doctor got closer, he saw, hidden in the undergrowth, a strange artifact, fifteen meters in diameter, matte gray with a backdoor. On the back were two bumps like those of a Cadillac automobile. In the front was a glass dome.jac3.jpgRivera took a picture with his camera and made a slide of the artifact. Suddenly, all Rivera’s courage vanished and a terrible panic seized him.He drove away on his motorcycle. For 12 years the valuable slide remained in a drawer in the Rivera home until he took it to a medical conference held in Malaga in 1978, where a well-known and respected doctor “borrowed" the slide (allegedly for analysis). Despite the insistent requests by Dr. Rivera, his image was never returned.

Near Death Experience Comes to Life - Daily Grail

Near Death Experience on the Cover of Newsweek

Last week I quickly mentioned that the topic of near-death experience had made the cover of Newsweek. I didn't have much time to discuss it then (and I still don't, really) because…I'm writing about near-death experiences (for my book). But at the time, I quickly mentioned on my Twitter account a couple of things that concerned me about the case, and the big publicity it was getting:

That the Newsweek piece was pitched as 'Proof of heaven/afterlife', but no real evidence was offered in the article. That Eben Alexander's experience actually didn't sound overly like a typical NDE…in fact, it sounded a whole lot more like a psychedelic experience via entheogens such as Salvia or DMT.

My latter point was quickly supported by a satirical article on Gawker which asked readers to try and pick whether phrases were from the Newsweek NDE feature, or from internet postings about drug experiences. The former point was, as could be predicted, picked apart by prominent atheists, including P.Z. Myers and Sam Harris.

Now firstly, I'm not as concerned as some that Newsweek ran the story - it's a human story, and fascinating in its own right, something that a lot of peope would want to read. Hardly an "archaeological artifact that is certain to embarrass us in the eyes of future generations", as Sam Harris would have it (whoah there with the hyperbole Sam!). All the same, I think Harris makes some good points in his critique, most notably:

Everything — absolutely everything — in Alexander’s account rests on repeated assertions that his visions of heaven occurred while his cerebral cortex was “shut down,” “inactivated,” “completely shut down,” “totally offline,” and “stunned to complete inactivity.”

Where I would urge caution though, and Sam Harris even quickly mentions this himself, is that we should probably be reserving judgement until the book itself is released (on October 23). Now, some blame should go to Newsweek's headlining department, because I expected some decent evidence to be put forward, when it wasn't. But there are elements to the case that weren't mentioned in the Newsweek article which will obviously be in the book, and which no doubt led Alexander to his conclusion that his 'NDE' was proof of an afterlife. Perhaps the most prominent of which was that the woman he interacted with during the experience was his birth sister whom he had never seen an image of before (Alexander was adopted out), and who had died just a few years previous to his illness. He mentions it in this clip:

Now, from his description of how this all played out, I'm sure skeptics could pull this piece of 'evidence' itself apart enough to show there are scenarios that explain how he saw his dead sister. But it does make clear that there are other interesting elements to the story that convinced Alexander to his way of thinking (and may convince others). So perhaps we should steady down with the criticisms for now.

Though I'm not sure Dr Alexander and his publishers would be overly concerned with more publicity at this stage - his book is currently (as I write) #2 on Amazon, and it's still a week away from official release. Ahem, Newsweek, I have a cool book out soon that you might like to mention…
